In a beginning, Vishnu is lying asleep on an ocean of milk.
Vishnu's bed is an enormous cobra called Ananta, whose coils serve as his mattress and whose numerous hoods form a canopy over the slumbering deity. Vishnu's wife, the Goddess, who never sleeps, sits lovingly massaging his feet.
In the course of Vishnu's dream, a lotus grows out of his navel, and lying there in the petals is a shiny golden egg. This egg will hatch into our solar system.
Guiding the egg's development is Brahma. He is the mastermind behind our local universe. He shapes a Sun and a Moon and several planets from the debris of the last time the solar system formed.
Finding people to inhabit this new world won't be hard either. There are plenty of souls left over from the last incarnation of the solar system. They've been sound asleep in their SUBTLE BODIES for eons, just like Vishnu. Once a physical planet is in place, Brahma will toss these souls back into physical bodies, so they can complete their unfinished business from previous lives.
There are a number of problems Brahma needs to resolve before he can proceed, but he can't do it all himself. So he tries to wake up Vishnu. But Vishnu is dead asleep.
At this point, Brahma turns to Vishnu's wife, the Goddess, and pleads, "YOU ARE THE SUPREME, PRIM POWER, THE LIMITLESS STORE OF ENERGY THAT CONTINUES TO EXIST EVEN AFTER THE MATERIAL WORLD FADES AWAY. YOU REMAIN ACTIVE EVEN WHEN GOD, THE PRIMORDIAL INTELLIGENCE, PASSES INTO AN UNCONSCIOUS STATE. HE SLEEPS ON THE SNAKE ANANTA, WHOSE NAME MEANS INFINITE TIME, WHO FLOATS IN THE MILKY OCEAN OF PRIMORDIAL MATTER. PLEASE REMOVE THE INERTIA FROM THE LORD'S AWARENESS, SO HE CAN WAKE UP!"
Having been asked so nicely, the Goddess lift the veil of unconsciousness from the cosmic intelligence called Vishnu. Vishnu leaps up, refreshed and invigorated. He and Brahma set about cleaning out negative energies obstructing creation.
